In Ancient folklore the rind of the mangosteen fruit was used to make a tea for conditions such as diarrhea, bladder infections, and gonorrhea. Ointments were used and applied to skin rashes.
The rind of the mangosteen fruit has been found to contain xanthones. Laboratory studies suggest xanthones have anti-cancer effects when they are studied in test tubes. They also have been found to have anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antimicrobial, and antiseptic properties.
Although the “superfruit” properties are often attributed to the xanthone content, some of mangosteen’s medicinal properties may be because of compounds called tannins. Tannins have anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and astringent properties. They have been shown to be beneficial for such conditions as diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, and skin conditions.
