Perilla frutescens is an Asian plant that is a member of the mint family containing high amounts of Omega 3 fatty acids. Leaf extracts have shown anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory, and tumor-preventing effects that may prevent the progression of glomerulonephritis (a type of kidney disease that impedes filtration). Many health benefits have been associated with Perilla Oil. Serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels decreased in rats fed perilla oil. Beneficial changes in the levels of eicosapentaenoic acid and arachidonic acid were also observed in these animals. In a model of age-related deficits in learning and memory, mice fed a diet enriched with perilla oil demonstrated better learning performance and less hyperactive behavior than those fed an alpha-linolenate-deficient diet. Studies suggest that this plants oil may have many cardiovascular benefits as well being high in Omega 3 fatty acids.
Eager to find a new approach to fighting the disease, Japanese researchers examined how perilla oil affects colon cancer in laboratory animals.4 One group of animals was fed a diet that was high in perilla oil, one high in safflower oil, and two had different blends of the oils. At the end of the study, the animals’ tissues were examined for the presence of the precancerous cells. According to the researchers, the results “suggest that perilla oil, even in small amounts, suppresses the development of aberrant crypt foci, and is therefore a possible preventive agent in the early stages of colon carcinogenesis.”To learn more
Why Not Use a Fish Oil?
With the pollution problems in our world today, fish are not the best choice for Omega 3 fatty acids being most susceptible to their environment. Animals and humans tend to store their toxins in fatty tissue and this has certainly been true of fish. Many scientists are finding high mercury content within fish causing great concern in the scientific community. Plastic is another problem that seems to be showing up in the food chain. Researchers are finding high amounts of plastic in fish and birds who are mistaking plastics for a food source. Another problem with fish oil is rancidity. To prevent exposure to toxicity and the problems being seen with rancidity, Perilla oil has been a healthy alternative to mee the need for healthy Omega 3 fats.
Did You Know?….
Perilla Oil with its high Omega 3 content has been shown to reduce the risk of first and second heart attacks as well as reduce the risk of colon and breast cancer.
