Insulin Resistance and Cardiovascular Disease

Big Pharma and Diabetes

There is no doubt about it that millions of dollars are spent on marketing and advertising by the prescription drug companies.  Most consumers associate heart disease which includes heart attacks and strokes with high cholesterol levels. Statins (medications that reduced cholesterol) have proved to be one of the most profitable drugs being used by the drug industry.  It was reported that one pharmaceutical company reported billions of dollars in sales coming from these types of medicines in one year alone. Is there more to cardiovascular disease than cholesterol?  Many researchers believe that high cholesterol is a symptom of other problems the body is trying to remedy.

Diabetes and Emotions

One significant threat regarding heart disease that many people fail to notice is insulin resistance. Research is showing that insulin resistance is playing a major role in cardiovascular disease. Unfortunately, many are unaware of the danger of insulin resistance and its association with heart disease. Investigators are presently researching the link in between these 2 conditions and looking for means to reduce the threat.

Diabetes and Heart Disease

Diabetes SignHere are some interesting facts about cardiovascular disease and diabetes:

The 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease are closely related.   Sadly, diabetics who don’t have heart disease have the same risk for a heart attack as non-diabetics who have heart problems.

Insulin resistance and inflammation can be decreased without the use of prescription medications that can have harmful side effects.

Some healthy supplements that are known to decrease insulin resistance include fish oil, white bean extract, chromium, vitamin D, Lipoic acid, DHEA, resveratrol, magnesium, beta glucans, apples, cinnamon, polyphenols, and environment-friendly tea.

The majority of individuals that have cardiovascular disease and diabetes mellitus are generally insulin-resistant.  Being insulin resistant results in raised blood sugar, high triglyceride levels, lower good cholesterol, increased swelling, and an increased risk associated with diabetic issues, cardiac arrest as well as stroke.

Metabolic Syndrome and Heart Disease

Ralphie MayMedical textbooks started describing labeling a condition called Metabolic Syndrome around 1998.  This is not a disease but it is a condition that affects over 47 million Americans.  To be described as having metabolic syndrome a person must meet 3 of the five factors that are involved.  These factors are triglyceride levels above 150 milligrams per deciliter, high blood pressure, high bad cholesterol levels, high blood sugar levels and fat accumulating in the abdominal region.

Being diagnosed with Metabolic Syndrome doubles your risk for heart attacks and strokes and increases the likelihood of diabetes by a factor of 5.

The First step in defending against metabolic disorder is to gauge your possible risk.  Checking insulin resistance with simple blood tests and measuring cholesterol, insulin, triglycerides, CRP and DHEA.

Metabolic syndrome is acknowledged by different names – insulin resistance syndrome, syndrome X, borderline diabetes mellitus.  It is commonly related to enhanced inflammation in addition to a three-fold or higher risk for heart stroke, diabetes, and also attack.

Metabolic Syndrome – Also Known As Insulin Resistance

heart attackMetabolic disorder is shown to increase atherosclerotic plaque, increase bad cholesterol and increase inflammation.  Even with great cholesterol levels, people who have metabolic disorder can have concealed atherosclerotic plaquing within the body.

If you are worried about having blood sugar issues see your health care professional and tell them about your concerns. No one cares about your own health more than you!  Do your own research to find out exactly what test is the best fit for you.  Consult your doctor regarding your findings.  If your medical professional is unwilling to cooperate, it may be time to find another health care provider

Be aware that the more weight you gain the more your chances of metabolic syndrome increase. Dropping weight and eating healthy is a simple step we all can take to improve our health and wellbeing.

The more sugar you eat, the more you may weigh. Most studies have linked sugar with type-2 diabetes and obesity, thanks to the loads of empty calories it contributes to.

Tips on Increasing Your Nitric Oxide

Heart Beats 100,000 times per day

Women exercising for Cardiovascular healthNow you have even more reasons to spend your quality time working out at the gym.  Not only will you be able to achieve that fit looking body so many people desire, you will also do your health some good by producing more Nitric Oxide.  According to new research, it seems that exercise helps in the production of Nitric Oxide.  Why do you want to produce Nitric Oxide?

What Is Nitric Oxide (NO)?

Nitric oxide (NO) is a molecule that is produced by healthy arteries, in particular, endothelial cells. Endothelial cells are the cells that line the interior of our arteries.  For years scientist were baffled by the mechanism which allowed arteries to relax.  In 1998 three scientists discovered that nitric oxide is what the body used to relax blood Nitric Oxide is good for the heartvessels.  They received a Nobel prize in medicine for their important discovery.  Not only did they find that the body uses Nitric Oxide to relax blood vessels they also discovered that the body used this molecule in the immune system, nerve signaling, dilation of blood vessels and muscle growth.  I hope you are now seeing the importance of this amazing molecule!

If you want to learn more about the scientist and their amazing find just Google, (Robert F. Furchgott, Louis J. Ignarro, and Ferid Murad.

Nitric Oxide Benefits

As alluded to earlier, nitric oxide does much more than just produce relaxed arteries. It is used by the body and plays an important role in our immune system. Scientists have also discovered that nitric oxide has other beneficial roles in inflammation, the nervous system, and the programming of cell death known as apoptosis.

Viagra and Nitric Oxide

Nitric Oxide is good for our heartSince the discovery of nitric oxide scientists, there have been found many commercial uses for increasing the production of this molecule. Many people do not realize that Viagra was produced for improving cardiovascular health.  Initially, researchers thought the drug was a failure and were ready to recall the medication from participates in their trial study. When they started asking for the drugs back from the research group the participates were reluctant to comply. They soon learned the benefit the drug was having on the study group and let’s just say the rest is history.

While Viagra was unable to work as a cardiovascular aid it did improve circulation by affecting small arteries in producing nitric oxide. We now know that there are natural supplements that you can take to increase nitric oxide production in the body. It also seems that exercise is an activity that can increase nitric oxide production as well. Maybe that is why so many bodybuilders and muscle and fitness forms are talking about nitric oxide supplements.

Exercise Increases Nitric Oxide

Exercise and heart healthTwo studies have shown that exercise can increase nitric oxide production.(Nitric Oxide Studies)  After 30 minutes of exercise, nitrates were measured using a gas chromatography.  The results showed that just 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise increased nitric oxide urinary excretion.  From this study, the researchers concluded that physical exercise plays a part in the increase of nitric oxide production.

What I truly find amazing about natural supplements that assist the body in producing nitric oxide is that many doctors already know about these supplements. However, they a are unable to prescribe these supplements to support cardiovascular health. Any deviation from the medical norm, beneficial or not, can be a source of great trial and tribulation for any medical doctor who attempts to go against the powers that be.

If you’re looking for a natural supplement that can benefit your cardiovascular system check out our list of nitric oxide producing products. They have been specifically designed to give the body what it needs to encourage nitric oxide production.

Heart Attacks Increase During the Holidays

heart attackHeart Attacks increasing during the holidays is a scary thought but is it true? For years medical professionals have been baffled by an increase in heart attacks during the holiday season. According to a study performed by Tufts University School of Medicine, the increase is 5 percent more heart-related deaths during the holiday season.

ksdk.comEnberg’s wife, Barbara, confirmed her husband’s death to USA TODAY Sports on Thursday night. She told The San Diego Union-Tribune it appeared Enberg suffered a heart attack at their La Jolla, Calif., home as he prepared to fly from San Diego to Boston on Thursday morning. | Longtime sports broadcaster Dick Enberg dies at 82

For many years, researchers have been intrigued by a disturbing pattern: Deadly heart attacks increase during the winter holiday season. One study even found distinct spikes around Christmas and New Year’s Day.

The Truth Behind More Holiday Heart Attacks

What is Behind Holiday Heart Attacks?

Many of the heart-related events that come up this time of year are known as the “Happy Hanukkah Heart Attack” or the “Merry Christmas Coronary.”

What is behind the cardiovascular events that are happening this time of year? Researchers are aware that more people suffer heart attacks during cold weather when blood vessels are more constricted due to the weather. This does not seem to explain why more people have heart attacks during the holidays than other times of the winter months.

“But we’re also learning that there are certain triggers for cardiovascular events,” he adds, “including time of the year and seasons. If we can get a true handle on the seasonal variation, we could knock down death from coronary disease.”

A medical Journal called Circulation had some interesting suggestions regarding the reason heart attacks increase during this time of year. They stated that some individuals don’t want to interrupt the family gathering so they put off seeking medical attention.

perfect storm heart attack

Another factor they believe comes into play is that people overindulge during this time of year and that there can be a lot of emotional stress. Sounds like the perfect storm for a cardiovascular event.

While researchers don’t know exactly why heart attacks are more common around holidays, they note a number of possible reasons, including changes in diet and alcohol consumption during the holidays; stress from family interactions, strained finances, travel and entertaining; respiratory problems from burning wood; and not paying attention to the signs and symptoms of a heart attack.

Heart Attack Solution

What is the solution? Of course, it seems quite simple. Don’t overindulge, seek medical attention if you are experiencing symptoms of cardiovascular problems and seek time to de-stress.  We must realize that cardiovascular events develop over time.  It is not a disease that happens suddenly.

For the majority of people, it is a disease that is self-inflicted.  The best solution is prevention and taking responsibility for our health.  As for me, I’ll  be drinking my Cardio Cocktail!!!

Does All Disease Begin in the Gut?

Microbiome and gut flora

Healthy MicrobiomeBeing involved in naturopathic medicine, all diseases began in the gut, is a statement I have have heard that for many years. I was not sure if I truly believed that was true.  Now, new scientific research is showing the accuracy of that statement and how our diet plays a major role in our health.

The health of our body including our brains health is proving to be connected with the intestinal organisms that live within our body. It’s interesting to note that there are more organisms living on us and on us than there are of our own cells.

Microbiome and gut healthOur health is being dictated by what is going on inside our gut. More importantly, scientists are now telling us that the health of our brain is being influenced by our intestinal health. This should give us great cause for concern with regard to our diet and what we are putting into our mouth.

Advocates of GMO foods like to tell us that there is no proof of genetically modified foods damaging any cells within the human body. That may be true however there is proof that genetically modified organisms can damage the healthy intestinal organisms living inside of us. That is why I am not interested in purchasing anything that is genetically modified.

Scientist call organisms within our intestines the microbiome. Research is now showing that this plays a pivotal part in our health, regarding detoxification, vitamin production, inflammation, neurotransmitters within the body, and whether you feel full or feel hungry. All of these factors can figure into chronic health issues like dementia, ADHD, cancer, asthma, allergies, and other chronic health concerns.

Brain Health and Cardio CocktailWhat was very interesting to me is to learn that the microbiome can also affect your mood, your perceptions of the world, thoughts of clarity and even your libido. Researchers are now suggesting that a dysfunctional intestinal gut may be the foundation of chronic headaches, inability to concentrate, anxiety, and an overall negative outlook on life.

If you think about it, the microbiome seems to be affecting just about everything in our health. Our physical and emotional health may all be determined by the state of our intestinal well-being. To find out if this is true or not the National Institute of Mental Health allocated over $1 million to research the relationship between gut flora and our health.

Given the microbiome’s potential person-specific physiological roles, recent studies suggest that it may serve as a good predictor for disease risk (Griffin et al., 2015xDoes our gut microbiome predict cardiovascular risk? A review of the evidence from metabolomics. Griffin, J.L., Wang, X., and Stanley, E. Circ Cardiovasc Genet. 2015;

Our Gut Microbiome: The Evolving Inner Self: Cell

Microbiome and gut floraSo does all disease begin in the gut? I really can’t say for sure but I do know that I’m going to give more attention to my emotional and physical health and the foods that I put into my body.

My goal is to consume only non-GMO foods and to buy organic food items as much as possible. I’m also going to be looking at supplementing my health with probiotics and prebiotic’s that support my intestinal health.

Similarly, studies have suggested a role of the gut microbiota in the risk of developing neuropsychiatric illnesses like schizophrenia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism and even chronic fatigue syndrome. Researchers have suggested that in genetically susceptible people, altered microbes in the gut may disrupt the blood-brain barrier, leading to the production of antibodies that adversely affect normal brain development.

Lifting Can Make You A Loser

Weight Training after 60

Eat Healthy for good healthLooking to lose some weight and dieting just isn’t working for you.  As we age it seems to become more difficult to lose those excess pounds.  New research is showing that individuals 60 years of age and older might want to begin adding weight training to their weight loss program.   Researchers at the Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina stated that if you want to slim down you need to preserve muscle mass.  Their study enrolled 249 overweight or obese adults in their 60s as part of the 18-month research program. The individuals were divided into three separate groups

One group followed a calorie-restricted diet alone and no exercise, while the second group adhered to strictly a limited diet and a cardio exercise program that involved walking. The 3rd group was given a diet regimen plus weight training program.  The researchers checked information on the volunteers’ body composition at 6 months and 18 months.

The data collected was assessed through dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. The individuals’ physical capabilities were examined, which was measured by a 400-meter walking test and knee extensor strength examination.

Women exercising for Cardiovascular healthThe findings revealed that participants in the diet plus weight training group shed more, weight than those that adhered to either a restricted diet regimen plus walking or limited diet regimen alone. Similarly, those who participated in the weight training group showed a much less muscle mass loss compared with the other groups.

“[This] isn’t terribly surprising, given that resistance training is a well established stimulus for muscle growth. What was surprising, however, is that diet [plus] aerobic training was not able to attenuate lean mass loss compared with diet alone. [Another] surprise finding was that diet [plus] exercise resulted in nearly twice as much fat mass loss than diet alone. Although this may have been due to enhanced compliance in the diet [plus] exercise groups, I think it sends an important pragmatic message that the diet [plus] exercise combination is most effective at maximizing fat — and thereby total weight — loss in a community-based setting,” lead author Kristen Beavers states in a Med Page Today report.

The findings are presented at the annual Obesity Week meeting and published in the journal Obesity.

More interesting results for seniors in their 60s

Weight Training SeniorThe research team observed that individuals in the weightlifting team lost a total amount of 17 extra pounds after 18 months, compared with only 16 pounds in the diet plus walking group and 10 pounds in the diet-only group. The health and wellness specialists have additionally found that the muscular tissue loss was most evident in the diet plan plus walking team compared with individuals in the diet-only or diet plan plus weight training groups.

The muscular tissue mass loss was 20 percent in the diet plan and walking group compared with just 16 percent in the diet-only group and only 10 percent muscle loss in the diet plus weightlifting group. These findings indicate that weight loss is connected to exercise and dieting.  The best results appear to be the group that incorporated weightlifting.

Weight Training after 60

For Seniors, the results emphasize the value of protecting muscle mass while attempting to lose weight. If you are approaching are in your 60’s is time to hit the weights.  I only wish they would have included a group that dieted, practiced cardio and weight training.  I would have been happy to have volunteered.
